CBD and Pain Relief

CBD and arthritis relief

33% of Americans have tried CBD. Are you one of them? Or are you a skeptic like I was? I’m not the type to spend my hard-earned cash without doing a bit of research, and I don’t expect you to either. If you struggle with pain and you’ve heard CBD can help, but you need to understand how, this article’s for you.

Why try natural pain remedies

If you’re considering CBD, chances are you’re already familiar with the benefits of natural pain relief. One benefit is simply avoiding the negative side effects of traditional pain medications. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal, kidney or liver issues, OTC pain meds should be avoided completely. Prescription pain medications are also risky. Along with negative side effects, they’re easy to misuse and highly addictive.

On the bright side, CBD is non-toxic and considered safe, even with extended use. Moreover, new studies suggest CBD can actually help decrease opioid addiction by reducing cravings and anxiety. This can improve the transition of weaning off opioids.

How CBD affects pain

Now for the science. A study from the European Journal of Pain stated, “CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis,” (Harvard Health Publishing, 2018). Along these same lines, the Arthritis Foundation noted, “Of those currently using CBD to manage arthritis symptoms, roughly 3 out of 4 report it was either effective or very effective in relieving several symptoms.”

However, arthritis isn’t the only type of pain CBD can potentially relieve. In fact, CBD’s effects are so broad and complex many who study it refer to it as promiscuous. Naughty CBD. Let’s look at some examples why.

  • CBD inhibits the absorption of anandamide, a cannabinoid found naturally in our bodies. Anandamide influences appetite, mood, pain and even fertility, and it’s known as the “bliss molecule.” Inhibiting absorption leads to increased anandamide levels and, as a result, better management of pain.

  • Another way CBD affects pain is by inhibiting glutamate levels in the spinal cord and brain. “Glutamate is associated with the transmission and increased sensations of pain,” (Health Canal, 2020).

  • CBD can also affect pain by targeting the alpha-3 glycine receptor. This leads to reduced chronic pain and inflammation.

The list goes on, and it will continue to go on as more studies become available. CBD only recently joined the mainstream medical playing field, but now that it’s here, the obstacles that once prevented cannabis research are disappearing.

The best CBD for pain relief

Now that you’ve decided to give CBD a try, it’s time to decide which product is right for you. The two best options for pain relief are CBD tinctures and topical CBD products.

CBD tinctures

A CBD tincture is taken by placing a dose under your tongue for 60 seconds and then swallowing. This is one of the quickest ways to get CBD into your bloodstream. It also allows the CBD to do what it does best - multitask. This multitasking allows the CBD to reduce inflammation and combat pain systemically. It can also help with the anxiety that goes along with pain and injury.

Deep relief Gel and Cream

CBD topicals are great because you can really hone in on specific symptoms and painful areas. A roll on gel can work wonders on muscle pain and provide almost immediate relief when coupled with the cooling effects of menthol and camphor. A high concentration cream is great for joint pain and reducing inflammation.

Altogether, just remember that CBD works a little differently for each of us. Finding your optimal dose and favorite topical may not happen overnight. That’s why we’re always here for you.
